CBC's Women Take Home NWAACC Golf Championship

Head Coach:
Dan Clifford
1st season, 6-3, .667
Head Assistant Coach:
Megan Bruce, 1st season
Overall Record:
6-3 NWAACC Champions
East Region Record:
6-3, 2nd place
Individual Accomplishments:
Mandi Villanueva, East Region 1st Team
Dan Clifford East Region Coach of the Year

Season Summary:
The CBC Women’s Golf Team put everything together at the NWAACC Championship to bring home CBC’s second championship of the school year. The team shot a 482 during the two day tournament at Hangman and Indian Canyon Golf Courses in Spokane. The 482 was seven shots ahead of region rival Spokane, who won the East Region title without losing a match all season, until the NWAACC Championship match, where they were upset by the Hawks.

The Hawks were impressive during the season; Mandi Villanueva was named to the All-East Region 1st team and shot a 164 at the championship good for 6th place. Mandi’s season was spectacular cumulating in her signing a letter of intent to play at University of Idaho. Amanda Bjork shined on the biggest stage, earning a 3rd place finish at the championship while being a constant threat all season long. Dan Clifford also won the East Region Coach of the year in his first season as Head Coach. First year Head Assistant Coach, Megan Bruce, was also a major contributor the Hawks’ success.

The program will lose three golfers next season, but with three returning golfers and a strong recruiting class, CBC should compete for another championship.

Current CBC Athletics Report

The CBC baseball team hosts first place Wenatchee Valley tomorrow at 1 PM. The Hawks (23-8, 7-4 East) trail Wenatchee (18-4, 7-3 East) by a half game heading into the contest. Admission is free.

Sports Update
CBC’s golf program started the 2008 season at the Olympic CC Invitational at the Gold Mountain golf course. The day was highlighted by a second place finish on the women’s team by Mandy Villanueva (161). Amanda Bjork placed 8th after shooting a 168. On the men’s side, CA Everson and Alex Ely each shot a 154 for a 10th place finish. New coaches Dan Clifford and Megan Bruce have been busy preparing for a six-tournament schedule including the NWAACC Championship Tournament at Hangman and Indian Canyon Golf Courses in Spokane.

The softball team is currently 8-8 in the East Region and 11-15 overall. The Hawks have a strong offensive attack led by Pasco High graduate, Brittany Cherry. Cherry is batting .613 with 10 homeruns and 28 RBI. Amy Woodland from Lewiston High, is batting .403 with 31 hits, 16 RBI, and 22 runs scored. Sophomore Jennie Harp is batting .364 with eight homeruns and 20 RBI. As a team, CBC boasts a batting average of .320 with 48 doubles and 28 homeruns. The Hawks sit in fifth place after finishing last week 1-3 but still have a chance to make the playoffs. The top four teams from the East Region earn a bid to the NWAACC Championship Tournament on May 16th in Portland, OR. With twelve games remaining in league play, the Hawks have plenty of time to make a run.

CBC’s baseball team still holds the NWAACC’s top ranking according to the first coaches poll. The Hawks are 23-8 overall and 7-4 in the East Region.

CBC’s offense has been a bright spot, sporting a batting average of .295. The Hawks are led by sophomore Brett Bochsler from Inglemoor High with a batting average of .413 and Kamiakin High graduate Phil Liniger with a batting average of .402 and a slugging percentage of .548. Wilsonville High (OR) graduate, Tyler Reeves, is batting .398 with a team high 30 runs scored and is tied with Woodinville High graduate, Luke Fieser with 45 total hits. Fieser is batting .387 and leads the team with 24 RBI.

Pitching has also been a factor in the Hawks’ success this season with a team ERA of 1.94. The Hawks’ hurlers have thrown eight shutouts, holding opponents to a batting average of .200 while recording 217 strikeouts in 238 innings pitched. Kamiakin High graduate, Bryce Hjellum is 4-0 with an ERA of 1.65 while holding opponents to a batting average of just .132. Hudson Bay High graduate, Steve Ames is 3-1 with an ERA of .78 with 34 strikeouts in 34.67 innings pitched and Brad Rutherford from Big Sky High (MT) leads the NWAACC with 10 saves.

On the defensive end, CBC leaves plenty of room for improvement. Over the course of the eight losses on the season, the team defense is averaging 4.3 errors per game and overall the average is 2.2 errors per game.
